Pakistan: Bail delayed in Christian blasphemy case

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A judge hearing the case of a Pakistani Christian girl accused of blasphemy delayed her bail hearing on Thursday after a lawyer questioned a medical report putting the girl's age at 14, suggesting the government had tried to influence it.

The new challenge quashed the possibility that the controversy surrounding the case would be swiftly defused and the girl set free. The case has focused attention on Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws that can result in life in prison or even death.

Christians in her Islamabad neighborhood left the area en masse as soon as the accusations surfaced, fearing retribution from their Muslim neighbors as the case has inflamed religious tensions in this Muslim majority country.

Questions have been raised about her age, whether she is mentally impaired, what exactly she was burning and why. A medical report submitted Tuesday put her age at 14, which would have moved the case to the more lenient juvenile justice system. It said her mental state was even less than that of a 14-year-old, which raised questions about whether she had the capacity to understand her actions.

But a lawyer representing a man accusing the girl of burning the Quran challenged the validity of the report in a court hearing in Islamabad. The room was crowded with lawyers, members of the Christian community and journalists, all standing pressed against the judge's bench as he listened to the lawyers.

Rao Abdur Raheem said the report was ordered by a top city official and completed even before the judge himself ordered it to be carried out. Saying the process was "unduly favoring the accused," he asked the judge to reject it.

Speaking after the hearing, Raheem said supporters of the victim were trying to turn this case into an international issue along the lines of Asia Bibi. The case of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death in 2010 for insulting Islam, gathered massive international attention and criticism for Pakistan's tough anti-blasphemy laws.

The lawyer said the girl had confessed to burning part of a Quran and said he would seek the maximum punishment. He said no one should be allowed to hurt the sentiments of Muslims by desecrating their holy book or by insulting their religious personalities.

"If you burn me, I will forgive you, but if you burn our Quran, then I will fight a legal battle to seek maximum punishment for anyone doing this act," he said. "We will not accept any such thing," he said.

Under the Pakistani legal system, everyday citizens can bring a court case against someone simply by hiring a lawyer. A state prosecutor was also in the courtroom, as were two defense lawyers for the girl, but the proceeding was dominated by Abdur Raheem.

Critics of Pakistan's blasphemy laws say they can be used to settle vendettas or seek retribution. Many of Pakistan's minorities, including Christians, live in fear of being accused of blasphemy.

People accused of the crime, even those that aren't convicted, often face vigilante justice by outraged Pakistanis. A Pakistani man accused of blasphemy in July was dragged from a police station in the center of the country, beaten to death and his body set on fire.

Few are willing to tackle the explosive issue after two prominent politicians who criticized the law were murdered last year. One was killed by his own bodyguard, who then attracted adoring crowds. The Pakistani government has been largely silent on the girl's case. Immediately following her arrest, President Asif Ali Zardari issued a statement calling for an investigation but has said nothing since then.

A defense lawyer for the girl, Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, said the report prepared by a seven-member medical board had not favored the girl, and the government had not tried to influence the doctors in any way.

"We will try our best to get her freed," he said.

The new bail hearing is scheduled for Saturday while the judge seeks clarification on how the report was conducted.

Climate change could increase levels of avian influenza in wild birds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Rising sea levels, melting glaciers, more intense rainstorms and more frequent heat waves are among the planetary woes that may come to mind when climate change is mentioned. Now, two University of Michigan researchers say an increased risk of avian influenza transmission in wild birds can be added to the list.

Population ecologists Pejman Rohani and Victoria Brown used a mathematical model to explore the consequences of altered interactions between an important species of migratory shorebird and horseshoe crabs at Delaware Bay as a result of climate change.

They found that climate change could upset the carefully choreographed interactions between ruddy turnstone shorebirds and the horseshoe crabs that provide the bulk of their food during the birds' annual stopover at Delaware Bay, a major estuary of the Delaware River bordered by New Jersey to the north and Delaware to the south.

Climate change-caused disruptions to the well-timed interplay between the birds and crabs could lead to an increase in the avian influenza infection rate among ruddy turnstones and resident ducks of Delaware Bay, the researchers found. Because Delaware Bay is a crossroads for many bird species traveling between continents, an increase in the avian infection rate there could conceivably help spread novel subtypes of the influenza virus among North American wild bird populations, according to Rohani and Brown.

Their findings were published online Aug. 29 in the journal Biology Letters.

"We're not suggesting that our findings necessarily indicate an increased risk to human health," said Rohani, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, a professor of complex systems and a professor of epidemiology at the School of Public Health.

"But every single pandemic influenza virus that has been studied has included gene segments from avian influenza viruses. So from that perspective, understanding avian influenza transmission in its natural reservoir is, in itself, very important."

Avian influenza refers to infection with bird flu Type A viruses. Those viruses occur naturally among wild aquatic birds worldwide and can infect domestic poultry and other bird and animal species.

Avian flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with avian flu viruses have occurred. Since 2003, for example, more than 600 cases -- including more than 300 deaths -- of human infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 have been reported worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Delaware Bay, which hosts many resident bird species as well as the hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that gather to feed on horseshoe crab eggs, is known as a hot spot for avian influenza virus. Infection levels in ruddy turnstones, which stop at Delaware Bay each May during their northbound migration to breeding grounds in the Arctic after wintering in South America, have been found to be exceptionally high.

The birds time their arrival at Delaware Bay to coincide with the availability of the horseshoe crab eggs. Brown and Rohani wondered what would happen to influenza levels in Delaware Bay birds if climate change altered the timing of the ruddy turnstone's migratory flight to Delaware Bay or affected the timing of horseshoe crab spawning.

Their mathematical model looked at virus infection rates in ruddy turnstones and two species of duck -- mallards, which winter at the bay, and American black ducks, which live there year-round.

The researchers found that if ruddy turnstones reached Delaware Bay either several weeks earlier or later than their current May arrival date, influenza infection rates in the species increased significantly, driving up the infection rates -- also called prevalence levels -- in the resident ducks as well.

"If the ruddy turnstones arrive either earlier or later than they do now, then their arrival coincides with higher viral prevalence in the resident ducks," said Brown, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Center for the Study of Complex Systems. "And because these birds are interacting with a greater number of infected resident ducks, prevalence levels in ruddy turnstones are boosted.

"There's a feedback mechanism at work as well. Higher prevalence levels in the ruddy turnstones may, in turn, impact the prevalence levels in the resident ducks, driving them even higher."

If the timing of the horseshoe crab spawning season at Delaware Bay changed significantly due to climate change, ruddy turnstone populations would drop significantly due to a loss of food, and the influenza infection rate would decrease sharply as well, the researchers found.

Delaware Bay was declared a site of hemispheric importance by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network in 1986. Sites of hemispheric importance act as staging, nesting or breeding grounds for at least 500,000 shorebirds annually, or at least 30 percent of the biogeographic population of any species.

Wynonna resumes tour after husband's crash

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Wynonna Judd is going back on tour after her husband lost his left leg in a motorcycle crash.

She says in a statement that husband Michael Scott "Cactus" Moser "continues to improve every day as he begins his road to rehabilitation."

Moser was also her drummer. Judd says they are looking forward to the day when they will be together again on stage.

Moser was injured Aug. 18 in South Dakota. He was airlifted to a hospital, and doctors amputated his leg.

Instead of gifts, the couple is asking people to donate in Moser's name to Homes For Our Troops. The organization helps members of the military with serious disabilities.

Judd's tour resumes Thursday in Michigan. She has also rescheduled shows that she missed because of the accident.

You need to develop and populate your own personal Whitmanesque song of yourself onto the Internet, into search-optimized text, links, images and photos ? and you need to do it well in advance of any problems you might potentially ever have, no matter how discrete and low-profile you might fancy yourself.

Back in the day, the Internet witch hunt was for politicians, then it became bankers, now it?s evolving toward anyone and everyone who?s thriving in free enterprise and pursuing the American dream, especially as it relates to what?s going on in Washington and the elections. There?s never been a worse time to take your ball and go home. So, it?s better to take some time, get together with your lawyer or business partner, and approve reams of text and start speaking for yourself, your life, your choices and your accomplishments instead of letting someone else speak for you (they?re never nearly as charming as you and your colleagues are, that?s for sure).

?But where?? you ask. Well, you first need to build out any sites you already have, including all your companies, foundations and boards. Next, you should become a blogger ? or at least develop a process to produce blog content since Google adores blogs and seriously understands the architecture and framework of most blog platforms. Bug Out Threats, Traffic and Fuel, Part One - Suburban Survival Blog

Living in NJ is an experience unto itself. ?Just ask any of my friends who live here that are transplants like me. ?It is certainly one of the most unique places I have ever been. ?People here just want to get from point A to point B when they are in the car. ?You would think so they do based on how quickly the traffic passes you and how the people drive. ?It?s a place where traffic either moves at 80 MPH down Route 3 or it moves at 5 MPH or less due to traffic. ?It?s rarely in between. ?One thing is also a fact, New Jersey is the most densely populated states in the country based on the number of square miles and the number of state residents. ?The bottom line, there?s just a lot of damn people on the road all the time. ?It makes it hard to navigate your car on the road, and you most?definitely need to remain vigilant and acutely aware of the traffic and conditions around you. ?This is just during normal conditions, imagine for a moment rush hour; rather, going nowhere fast hour when cars are lined up for miles and miles and miles. ?Ugh. ?I used to drive from Northern NJ to Central NJ every day to go to work about 9 years ago. ?I wanted to shoot myself. ?Honestly. ?By the time I got to work or by the time I got home from work, I was mentally exhausted just from the traffic, and the slow movement on the NJ Parkway. ?I wondered how people did it day after day for 30 years. ?My point, however, is that traffic was S? L? O? W?

Now, knowing that traffic can be overbearing at any given time of day or night, and knowing that seemingly for no reason at all the traffic you thought should be moving at a normal speed, is moving at a snails pace, add an emergency to the mix. ?Add an emergency that pushes people to the road to evacuate their homes, offices, etc. and have to go west towards Pennsylvania or north towards New York State. ?for those of you that do not know, there are only four main arteries that go towards Pennsylvania and only two or three main arteries that move towards New York State. ?Some of which intersect which could make life difficult. ?In addition there are only three main arteries that come from NYC to New Jersey further compounding the traffic and panic element.

To give you some perspective, where I live in Eastern New Jersey, is only 7 miles from the Lincoln Tunnel. ?If I decide to go to PA via Interstate 80, without traffic, it can take 60 ? 75 minutes to the border. ?Add a holiday weekend, and that 75 minutes can be extended to 120 ? 180 minutes as long as traffic is moving slowly. ?When it is moving less than slowly, it has taken me three hours to three and a half hours to go 120 miles. ?Sigh. ?Typically I will use just over a 1/4 tank of gas with minimal traffic. ?With holiday traffic I can use half a tank of gas. ?Gas milage is exponentially destroyed by idling in traffic. ?That said, I have no doubt in my mind, in an emergency situation with evacuation under way, I have no doubt traffic will be stopped for what would seem to be an eternity. ?Additionally, G-d forbid that there is an accident during an evacuation situation and traffic is stopped for hours or indefinitely. ?Panic, anger, stress, etc, would all ensue and attitudes would seemingly deteriorate quickly. ?I personally saw deterioration of attitudes after last years hurricane within a 24 hour period where people had no power, running water, refrigeration, etc. ?I can only imagine peoples attitudes stuck in a small car, let alone a home with no power or resources. ?Chaos would ensue. ?I must believe that in any urban environment, a similar situation could be easily replicable.

So, what are the immediate threats to getting to your Bug Out or Fall Back Locations? ?As I see it, Traffic is a real and present threat to getting to my and your destination in an urban or suburban environment. ?Second to that is your fuel consumption. ?Unless you have a backup tank in your vehicle or gerry cans with you, fuel is a commodity you don?t want to fool with. ?My suggestion is to always have close to a spare tank of gasoline in storage. ?I say this, without gasoline storage of my own because of the apartment I live in. ?I am currently making plans to store gasoline at a friends or rent a garage about 1.5 miles from my apartment so that I can store gear, fuel, and preps there. ?It is a private garage renting a bay from a person rather than a business. ?My rationale is that if I were to rent a storage unit (gasoline and?flammables?are against the rules to store anyway) and have the place go into lock down during an emergency, I thought it might be smarter to rent it privately, and off the books and pay in cash?

Getting back on track, I recommend you have at least an extra FULL tank of gasoline you can bring with you if you have to bug out to help eliminate the threat of running out of fuel prior to getting to your destination. ?Do what you have to in order to achieve this if you have bug out plans. ?What you think could be a slightly stressed drive on your gas tank can be much worse than you can imagine.

Backtracking for a moment, you should (and I am working on this actively) work through different bug out routes. ?Try them at different times of the day, week, year, holiday season, etc. ?Get a feel for them, and if you have to document your tests in a journal so that you can quickly reference it if you need to prior to a Bug Out. ?I have tried three of five possible routes for myself. ?I have done so, because I have traveled them each numerous times, and one may intersect with another either simplifying or complicating your route and situation. ?If you have the opportunity to use back roads (the roads less travelled) don?t fool yourself, they too will be slow going, as well as congested with people trying different routes to try and hedge their bets.

Lastly, the threat that has the highest variable is the human element. ?There is no telling when a frustrated evacuee will get so upset he tries to push the guy in front of him, get out of his or her car and try to assault you or someone else, etc. ?There is no telling if someone in that Ford Pinto will try to ride up the side of the road and break down and is now in your way since you?ve decided to do the same and you?re in your AWD Bug Out Vehicle (yes I am making an assumption). ?There are many variables?. Almost too many to count, and we have to take as many into account as we can the moment we decide to get on the road to Bugging Out.

The point here is to know your threats, and do an assessment to make the best decision you can for you and your family. ?Bugging Out at the right time is essential?

MGM Announces "James Bond Day"

After surviving MGM teetering on the brink of ruin, and a ton of uncertainty surrounding his newest film, you could say that James Bond deserves a day off. Seeing as how it?s his 50th birthday next month MGM agrees, as do the other distribution partners they?ve had over the years, and have thereby dubbed October the 5th Global James Bond Day. To celebrate such a rousing occasion they have prepared several different events for fans of all ages to experience.

The main focus of James Bond Day will be preparation for two important releases (one theatrical and one home video) of James Bond properties, but more importantly it?s a chance for MGM to celebrate, with their fans, the catalogue of James Bond films.

MGM plans to kick off James Bond Day with the release of Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story, a new documentary centered on the three men who helped bring James Bond to the silver screen: producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, along with Bond author Ian Fleming. The studio says that specific details will follow based on country, which suggests the film won?t just be distributed digitally.

Along with the release of the documentary, MGM will be holding a global survey to determine specific region?s favorite Bond film. Most would point to one of Connery?s Bond outings as their favorite, but the newer Brosnan and Craig iterations have certainly built solid fan bases as well.

In addition to the new documentary and survey, James Bond Day will also be celebrated with specific events in major urban hubs around the world. Los Angeles will play host to a ?Music of Bond? night at the Academy of Arts and Sciences (home of the Oscars), New York will feature a film retrospective at their Museum of Modern Art, and a ?Designing 007: 50 Years of Bond Style? fashion exhibition will be held at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In addition, Christie?s in London will be hosting a special auction dedicated to 50 lots of Bond film memorabilia with the proceeds going towards twelve different charities. No word on if any of Bond?s classic cars will be up for sale, but we wouldn?t be surprised if one or two of his clever gadgets were.

As one of the longest running film franchises in history, it?s surprising James Bond hasn?t been treated to his own day sooner. BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's government, unions and industry leaders agreed on Tuesday to raise the minimum wage by 25 percent as inflation shows few signs of cooling despite a slowdown in Latin America's No. 3 economy.

The minimum salary will rise in two stages to 2,875 pesos a month (US$621) from the current 2,300 pesos a month, although the full increase will not take effect until February.

"I'm very pleased to be part of this agreement between workers and bosses," President Cristina Fernandez told union leaders and business leaders gathered at the Labor Ministry.

Minimum wages will rise to 2,670 pesos from September 1 and to 2,875 pesos from February 1.

Private economists put inflation at more than 20 percent in Argentina, one of the region's highest rates and about twice the rate reported by the official INDEC statistics agency.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan says President Barack Obama wants to ease work requirements for welfare recipients even though that claim has been largely debunked by independent fact checkers.

Ryan told donors at a $1.2 million fundraiser in Missouri on Thursday that Obama wants to strip the work requirements from the welfare reform law. Ryan says it showed the president wants to promote dependency on government as a solution to economic woes.

The Obama administration granted a waiver requested by Republican and Democratic governors seeking greater flexibility in how to administer the welfare work requirement in their states. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign has seized on that in recent weeks, saying Obama undercut the welfare reform law signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996.
