Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 to enter mass production in late May

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 to enter mass production in late May

While Snapdragon 600 is already showing up on various flagship devices like the HTC One, PadFone Infinity, Galaxy S 4, Optimus G Pro and Xiaomi 2S, we're still looking forward to the big daddy of Qualcomm's lineup this year: the Snapdragon 800. At a media event in Beijing earlier today, Senior Product Manager Yufei Wang confirmed that his company's next flagship SoC will enter mass production in late May, but he refused to comment on which upcoming devices will feature it. And due to the current state of the silicon (even though vendors like ZTE are already sampling it), we weren't allowed to run any benchmark tests on the Snapdragon 800 development devices on display just yet, though we've been told to stay tuned in June.

What makes the 800 shine brighter than the 600 is its more powerful Krait 400 architecture, which can maintain a clock speed of up to 2.3GHz; but like before, the four cores are also clocked asynchronously for better power management. On top of that, the 800 comes with the new Adreno 330 graphics processor with 30fps 4K playback capability, while still featuring the improved Adreno 320's FlexRender technology that can dynamically switch between direct rendering and binning rendering for optimized performance and efficiency. We'll save the nitty-gritty for the proper launch of this 28nm chip later this year.

John Brawley flaunts first Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera video footage video

Noted Blackmagic Design shooter John Brawley has released the first footage from the company's upcoming $995 Pocket Cinema Camera that might leave your DSLR green with envy. Though it's always tough to judge compressed web footage, to our eyes it looks completely untouched by the moire, aliasing and compression artifacts that tends to plague other digital cameras. While not specifying whether he used the compressed RAW setting or not, Brawley said he shot it using a Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Micro Four Thirds lens with image stabilization turned on, meaning that feature's likely to be enabled on the camera when it arrives in late July. He also said he was "literally grabbing shots whilst I was shopping," which bodes well for serious filmmakers with a bit more time to spare. Head past the break to admire the video.

Taking it to the streets for love of hockey | Atlantic County Sports

Attention: open in a new window.PrintE-mail

streethockey1 Matt Strabuk/Sarah Winkel of Somers Point runs after the ball during a Women?s Street Hockey game on April 17. SOMERS POINT ? Hockey is no longer exclusive to rough, tough gap-toothed men from Canada who skate on ice chasing after a hard rubber disk.

In Somers Point, they?re having a ball playing hockey with a feminine touch ? not on ice but on concrete - but still highly competitive, fast-paced and physically demanding.

The Somers Point Women?s Street Hockey League is nearing the end of its first season. Four teams consisting of 51 players ranging in age from 19 to 44 will compete for the championship over the next two weeks on Wednesday nights at the street hockey rink next to Bud Kern Memorial Field.

?I think it?s really awesome that they started this league for us,? said Erica Stewart, 25, of Somers Point, who is captain of the ?Sweet Caroline?s? team. ?After the games on Wednesday we?re disappointed that we have to wait a week to play another game. It?s definitely an alternative to going to the gym for another day.?

On a recent Wednesday night, Caroline?s defeated the ?Primo-Donnas? 3-0. Goalie Tina Garcia registered the shutout. Goals were scored by Chris Scarborough, Tammy Zimmerman and Marley Halkes, who celebrated her goal with an impromptu victory dance.

The games are well organized and refereed. A scoreboard tracks the score as well as the time remaining in each period. League organizer Sara Henry thanked the Somers Point Board of Recreation and volunteers from the town?s youth hockey league for help in putting the games together.

streethockey3 Matt Strabuk/Blake Blomdahl of EHT faces off against Linda Gisondi of EHT, with volunteer referee Jeff Pritchard of Ocean City officiating. Henry said the league came about after a group of women played in a street hockey tournament last summer for the Field of Dreams in Absecon, an organization that provides baseball for handicapped children. She said the interest grew from that, and they were able to get enough women involved to put together a two-month season consisting of four teams, with hopes to expand in the future.

Henry said only a handful of the women had ever played any type of hockey before. ?We have a lot of fun out there. It?s starting to get more competitive now that the girls are into the flow of the game and stuff like that. We have a lot of natural athletes.?

Chris Scarborough is definitely one of those. The former Chris Ang played both street hockey and field hockey growing up in Somers Point, then went on to an outstanding field hockey career at Mainland Regional High School and Rider University.

She said she having ?a blast? playing in the recreational street hockey league. ?It?s not as new to me as it is to some of the others playing for the first time,? said Scarborough, who will be inducted into the Rider Athletic Hall of Fame this summer. ?There?s not a lot of opportunities to play in a rec league once you get out of high school and college. It?s nice to be able to play again, and to have the social aspect of it as well, make some new friends.?

streethockey2 Matt Strabuk/Blake Blomdahl of Egg Harbor Township charges forward with Jane Bertino of EHT defending. It was a natural progression for Brenda Klopp to get involved in the program. Both of her sons play street hockey, and she has coached the game along with her husband, Chris.

?It?s a family affair for us,? said Klopp, who has been working hard to promote the new league. ?I?ve talked to a lot of girls that didn?t even know about this. Now that the word?s getting out I?m sure it will just expand. I?d like to see eight teams down here, getting both courts going with two games at a time.?

Team sponsors for the first year of the program are Caroline?s By the Bay, Primo Pizza, Maynard?s Bar in Margate, and Action Uniforms. The four teams are set to face off in playoff competition on Wednesday, April 24, starting at 6:15 p.m., with the championship and consolation games set for May 1 at the same time.

Henry said the league is collecting donations for a summer camp for oncology children and their siblings. She asked that people coming out to the games the next two weeks should bring donations such as arts and crafts supplies, sunscreen, Band-Aids and other items that the children could use at the summer camp.

Strategy Analytics: Microsoft's share of tablet market quadrupled after Windows 8

Strategy Analytics Microsoft's share of the tablet market has quadrupled due to Windows 8

Say what you like about Windows 8, but before it arrived Microsoft's presence in the tablet sphere was as small as it was stagnant. By the reckoning of number-crunchers at Strategy Analytics, just 400,000 Windows-running slates were shipped globally in Q3 of last year -- a figure that was largely unchanged from the year before and which represented just 1.6 percent of the global tablet market. Six months later, now that the Windows-powered Acers, Lenovos and Surfaces of this world have had a chance to get their game on, Microsoft's share has quadrupled to 7.5 percent, with a total of three million Windows 8 and RT tablets shipped in Q1 2013. That's still pretty niche, but three million units would have equated to a bigger share were it not for the fact that the overall tablet market also grew over this period, from 25 million to 41 million units -- and at least Microsoft can now claim to be a part of that boom. Look past the break for the numerical breakdown.

Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline' sales up after bombings

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sales for Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" are up by 597 percent a week after the tune became a source of comfort following the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

Nielsen SoundScan said Wednesday the song sold 19,000 tracks this week. It sold 2,800 tracks the previous week and 1.75 million tracks to date.

The crowd-pleasing song is a staple of Boston Red Sox games. It makes no specific mention of Boston or the Red Sox, but the team started playing it regularly at Fenway Park more than a decade ago and fans took to it.

The New York Yankees, Toronto Raptors and other professional sports teams have also played the song at games in the days after last week's deadly blasts.

Diamond released "Sweet Caroline" in 1969. It is addressed to Caroline Kennedy.

(AP) ? New information emerged Wednesday from U.S. officials that the name of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects had been added to a U.S. government terrorist database long before the explosions. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, more than 4,000 mourners paid tribute to a campus police officer who authorities say was gunned down by the suspects.

Among the speakers at the memorial service in Cambridge, just outside Boston, was Vice President Joe Biden, who condemned the bombing suspects as "two twisted, perverted, cowardly, knockoff jihadis."

In a striking new development, U.S. officials said the name of the dead suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was added by the CIA to a terrorist database 18 months ago. The officials spoke to The Associated press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing case.

The disclosure was significant because officials have been saying the U.S. intelligence community had no relevant information leading up to the April 15 bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 260 others. Inclusion of one of the bomb suspects' name in a database for 18 months before the attack could prompt congressional inquiries about whether the U.S. government adequately investigated tips from Russia that Tsarnaev posed a security threat.

Tsarnaev's younger brother, surviving suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was listed in fair condition as he recovered from wounds suffered during a getaway attempt. He could get the death penalty if convicted of plotting with his older brother to set off the pressure-cooker bombs near the marathon's finish line. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in a shootout with police.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's father has called him a "true angel," and an aunt has insisted he's not guilty. His public defender didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.

The bombs were triggered by a remote detonator of the kind used in remote-control toys, U.S. officials said Wednesday. They said investigators found pieces of the remote-control equipment among the debris and were analyzing them.

Both U.S. officials are close to the ongoing investigation but spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. One official described the detonator as "close-controlled," meaning it had to be triggered within several blocks of the bombs.

The criminal complaint filed against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev said he was using a cellphone moments before the blasts.

U.S. officials also said he has told interrogators he and his brother were angry about the U.S. wars in Muslim Afghanistan and Iraq.

After closed-door briefings on Capitol Hill with the FBI and other law enforcement officials, lawmakers said earlier this week that it appeared so far that the brothers were radicalized via the Internet instead of by direct contact with any terrorist groups and that the older brother was the driving force in the bomb plot.

In Russia, U.S. investigators traveled to the predominantly Muslim province of Dagestan and were in contact with the brothers' parents, hoping to gain more information.

The parents, Anzor Tsarnaev and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, plan to fly to the U.S. on Thursday, the father was quoted as telling the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. The family has said it wants to bring Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body back to Russia.

Investigators are looking into whether Tamerlan, who spent six months in Russia's turbulent Caucasus region in 2012, was influenced by the religious extremists who have waged an insurgency against Russian forces in the area for years. The brothers have roots in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya but had lived in the U.S. for about a decade.

There was a new twist in the accounts of how Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured last week.

Two U.S. officials say he was unarmed when police captured him hiding inside a boat covered by a tarp in a neighborhood backyard. Authorities originally said they had exchanged gunfire with him for more than one hour Friday evening before they were able to subdue him.

The U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation, said investigators recovered a 9 mm handgun believed to have been used by Tamerlan from the site of a Thursday night gunbattle that injured a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer. Dzhokhar was believed to have been shot before he escaped.

The officials told the AP that no gun was found in the boat. Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis said earlier that shots were fired from inside the boat.

Asked whether the suspect had a gun in the boat, Davis said, "I'm not going to talk about that."

Kurt Schwartz, director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, did respond to the report.

"Within half a mile of where this person was captured, a police officer was shot. And I know who shot him." Schwartz said. "And there were three bombs that went off, and I know where those bombs came from. ... To me, it does not change anything. This guy was captured alive and will survive. True or not true, it doesn't change anything for me."

At MIT, bagpipes wailed as students, faculty and staff members and throngs of law enforcement officials paid their respects to MIT police Officer Sean Collier, who was ambushed in his cruiser three days after the bombing.

The line of mourners stretched for a half-mile. They had to make their way through tight security, including metal detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs.

Boston native James Taylor sang "The Water is Wide" and led a sing-along of "Shower the People."

Biden told the Collier family that no child should die before his or her parents, but that, in time, the grief will lose some of its sting.

"The moment will come when the memory of Sean is triggered and you know it's going to be OK," Biden said. "When the first instinct is to get a smile on your lips before a tear to your eye."

The vice president also sounded a defiant note.

"The purpose of terror is to instill fear," he said. "You saw none of it here in Boston. Boston, you sent a powerful message to the world."

In another milestone in Boston's recovery, the area around the marathon finish line was reopened to the public, with fresh cement still drying on the repaired sidewalk. Delivery trucks made their way down Boylston Street under a heavy police presence, though some damaged stores were still closed.

"I don't think there's going to be a sense of normalcy for a while," Tom Champoux, who works nearby, said as he pointed to the boarded-up windows. "There are scars here that will be with us for a long time."

Mild blast injury causes molecular changes in brain akin to Alzheimer

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A multicenter study led by scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine shows that mild traumatic brain injury after blast exposure produces inflammation, oxidative stress and gene activation patterns akin to disorders of memory processing such as Alzheimer's disease.

Their findings were recently reported in the online version of the Journal of Neurotrauma.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (TBI) has become an important issue in combat casualty care, said senior investigator Patrick Kochanek, M.D., professor and vice chair of critical care medicine and director of the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research at Pitt. In many cases of mild TBI, MRI scans and other conventional imaging technology do not show overt damage to the brain.

"Our research reveals that despite the lack of a lot of obvious neuronal death, there is a lot of molecular madness going on in the brain after a blast exposure," Dr. Kochanek said. "Even subtle injuries resulted in significant alterations of brain chemistry."

The research team developed a rat model to examine whether mild blast exposure in a device called a shock tube caused any changes in the brain even if there was no indication of direct cell death, such as bleeding. Brain tissues of rats exposed to blast and to a sham procedure were tested two and 24 hours after the injury.

Gene activity patterns, which shifted over time, resembled patterns seen in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's, Dr. Kochanek noted. Markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, which reflects disruptions of cell signaling, were elevated, but there was no indication of energy failure that would be seen with poor tissue oxygenation.

"It appears that although the neurons don't die after a mild injury, they do sustain damage," he said. "It remains to be seen what multiple exposures, meaning repeat concussions, do to the brain over the long term."

PFT: LB McClain arrested? |? Done with Ravens?

Kevin ColbertAP

One NFL evaluator who?s had success building through the draft sees less than 10 ?special? prospects in the Class of 2013 ? and a lack of depth at certain line positions on both sides of the ball.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Monday that the club believes there are likely between six and eight ?special players? in the draft, which starts Thursday evening.

However, Colbert, speaking at the club?s pre-draft press conference,?indicated the club was unlikely to be trading up from its No. 17 spot in Round One.

?I doubt that we move up,? Colbert said, according to a transcript from the Steelers. ?I think the more picks we have the better, in this draft particularly. But there will be a good player at 17, there?s no question about that.?

Of the 6-8 top prospects, Colbert said the best of the best in a draft are generally held in high regard by many teams.

?That?s usually a group I think everybody can identify and say, ?These kids should be special players, be it with us or be it with somebody else,? ? Colbert said.

Colbert told reporters the Steelers believe there are ?about 150? draftable prospects in the Class of 2013. Colbert also noted that ?there is a?nice group of potential starters? on the draft?s second day, which encompasses Rounds Two and Three.

However, Colbert noted that three positions ? tight end, interior offensive line and defensive ends who can play in a 3-4 scheme ? are lacking in numbers.

?It?s not a deep pool at those positions,? Colbert said.

By Colbert?s count, 14 teams employ the 3-4 ? long the base defensive front for Pittsburgh ? and he called the shortage of defensive ends who would fit in a ?30? front a ?little concerning.?

?That?s a position where there just are not a lot of guys,? he said.

Spain Lottery eyes 4.5 billion euro bond, or bridge loans: source

By Paul Day

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's state-owned Loterias, or Lottery, may raise up to 4.5 billion euros ($5.9 billion) through a bond or by seeking bridge loans before eventually going to capital markets, a source at the economy ministry told Reuters on Tuesday.

Loterias y Apuestas del Estado, as the company is formally known, will move forward with the bond issue after it finalises a 1.5 billion euros syndicated loan for which it has received offers of 4.3 billion euros, the source said.

The source did not say what the funds would be used for, but said the idea was to give Loterias a credit rating and debt structure that would be helpful should the state decide to sell shares in the company.

Last year Loterias had planned to raise 6 billion euros in debt with the funds going to help Spain's government bail out the country's cash-strapped autonomous regions. But the plan was scrapped in December when the regions needed less emergency liquidity than was originally thought.

The source said that the current plan for Loterias was to give it a debt load of two times EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) as had been recommended by external advisors two years ago when there was a plan for Loterias to launch shares on the stock market.

"All the external advisors argued that for the appropriate pricing of a company and for it to obtain a (debt) rating and have it objectively priced by the market, there was a case for debt of twice EBITDA," the source said.

He said there was no short-term plan, however, to revive the Initial Public Offering, or IPO, plan for Loterias, but that the idea was to give the company a compatible debt structure and maximum flexibility if the time should come.

Spain's Treasury is advising Loterias on its debt raising.

Loterias boasts the world's biggest jackpot and is Spain's most profitable publicly owned company with net profit of 2 billion euros expected this year, up 10 percent from last year.

Loterias said last week that it had received 4.3 billion euros in offers for the syndicated loan from 19 financial entities, of which 10 were foreign.

In a statement, Loterias said that it would decide on overall volume and the loan price in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday the economy ministry source said the 4.5 billion euros bond issue would come as a second tranche after the syndicated loan is finalised.

Demographic Breakdown of the Best High Schools

U.S. News evaluated 21,035 public schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia for the 2013 Best High Schools rankings, with 18,196 schools eligible to be ranked. Below, we have also conducted a detailed demographic breakdown of the 4,805 medal winners.

Poverty distribution: This is the percentage of a school's 2010-2011 total enrollment that was eligible for free or reduced-price lunches, or the percent of economically disadvantaged students. The schools that were medal winners are broken down by different percentages of poverty, ranging from less than 5 percent to greater than or equal to 75 percent.

Minority distribution: This is the percentage of a school's 2010-2011 total enrollment that was American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Black or Hispanic. The medal-winning schools are broken down by different percentages of minorities, ranging from less than 5 percent to greater than or equal to 75 percent.

School structure: This is the breakdown of which medal winners were designated as either charter or magnet as reported to the U.S. Department of Education Common Core Data website for the 2010-2011 school year.

Community environment: This is the distribution by type of geographic area where the medal-winning high schools are located across the U.S. The locations range from large cities, suburbs of large cities and mid-sized cities to small towns and remote rural areas.

From analyzing this demographic data, displayed in the table below, it's clear that the top-ranked high schools are a very diverse group of schools.

For example, 75 percent of all medal winners are high schools with students in poverty of greater than or equal to 25 percent of enrollment. Also, 50 percent of all medal-winning high schools had minority enrollment of greater than or equal to 25 percent of their students.

Finally, 54 percent of the medal winners are schools located away from cities and suburbs, including in remote or rural areas.

Samsung Researching How To Let You Control Your Phone With Your Brain

I just finished The Divine Invasion and if that is evidence of his writing, I won't be reading any more of his stuff.

Sure, I got where he was going, but it was a trudge, a very long trudge, to get to the end of such a short work.

I realize what I like others may not like and vice versa, but I can't see how other than his thought process can be held up as a master of sci-fi writing.

Kan. woman meets circus tiger in bathroom

(AP) ? A central Kansas woman likely won't remember her first circus for the clowns or performances ? it'll be the tiger in the bathroom.

The big cat had escaped briefly after its turn in the ring Saturday at the Isis Shrine Circus in Salina. Staff members blocked off the concourses at the Bicentennial Center as the tiger wandered into the bathroom, where one of the doors was blockaded.

About that time, Salina resident Jenna Krehbiel decided she needed to use the restroom. When she walked in the door that hadn't been blocked off, she found a tiger standing about 2 feet away, The Salina Journal reported (http://bit.ly/11eq218 ).

"You don't expect to go in a bathroom door, have it shut behind you and see a tiger walking toward you," Krehbiel said.

Chris Bird, manager at the Bicentennial Center, said the bathroom was only 25 feet long.

"Once she saw the tiger, I'm sure she knew to go the other way," Bird said. "Overall, it was a scary, surreal moment. I am glad no one was hurt or injured."

The tiger was captured within minutes and returned to its enclosure.

Krehbiel, a social worker, said she didn't scream or run because she is trained to stay calm.

"Looking back, it was a scary ordeal," she said. "At the time, I was thinking I just needed to get out."

Krehbiel said her 3-year-old daughter had a different reaction.

"My daughter wanted to know if it had washed its hands," Krehbiel said. "That was her only concern. I think that shows the thoughts of children and that they wouldn't have known there was danger."
