iPhone faces a real challenge as Android app revenue surges

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Honda Motor Co introduced its redesigned Civic sedan only a year-and-a-half after a major model change of the best-selling compact car in the United States. Even Honda admits that the 2012 Civic, introduced in the spring of 2011, missed the mark. For a company that prides itself on rock-solid reliability, it was a shock last summer when influential Consumer Reports ranked the Civic dead last in a field of 12 compact sedans it tested. Sales of the new Civic, a 2013 model, will start this week and the refreshed car was shown off on Thursday at the LA Auto Show. ...

Parents Learn of Daughter's Death at College Via Facebook (VIDEO)

Jasmine BenjaminJasmine Benjamin, a 17-year-old nursing student at Valdosta State University, was found dead on a couch in her dorm?s common study area on November 18, after having been deceased for up to 15 hours. No one reported her missing or even noticed that she was lying on the couch dead, despite no one seeing her alive since November 16. But friends and fellow students were quick to offer Jasmine's parents their condolences on Facebook, even though her parents had not been notified by the school or authorities of their daughter's death, which is now being treated as homicide.

Valdosta State University?s standard procedure is to contact the police in the hometown of a deceased student?s hometown and have the notification given in person to a student?s parents, which is the way it should be. The Gwinnett County Sheriff?s department notified Jasmine?s mother, Judith Brogdon, and stepfather, James Jackson, in person, but by the time notification arrived, the parents already knew via Facebook.

Can you imagine checking your Facebook page and seeing a rest in peace notification in your timeline from one of your daughter?s schoolmates? As a mother myself, I can only imagine that it must have been shocking and horrific. Her parents were probably out of their minds with worry trying to reach someone, anyone at the university to check on their daughter; those poor parents.

I remember holiday weeks being a zoo at college; students coming and going all week long, depending on when their classes ended for the week. It was a constant trickle. It would be fairly easy for someone to go missing and not be noticed.

However, a gigantic ball has been dropped when there is enough lag time between discovering a dead body and notifying next of kin that strangers have enough time to learn of the tragedy and post about it, especially when the loved ones have no idea anything is even wrong. We live in a society where social media reigns supreme and people know things instantly, sometimes even before those involved know what?s going on.

Benjamin?s parents are distraught that they found out about their child?s death via Facebook and the lack of communication that they have had from the university and the authorities since. Who could blame them? No parent should ever have to find out about his or her child?s death -- and even worse, possible murder!!! -- in this impersonal and disrespectful way. Parents deserve to be notified by authorities before the general public and never in this macabre public manner.

Gazans thank Iran for help in battling Israel

(AP) ? Residents of the Gaza Strip have plastered large billboards in key locations thanking Iran for its help during a recent eight-day battle against Israel.

The posters reflect the strong ties between Iran and the Hamas and Islamic Jihad militant groups in Gaza. Israel considers Iran to be its most dangerous enemy, citing Iran's support for the militants and its suspect nuclear program.

During the fighting, Gaza militants groups fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, including Iranian-made missiles reaching as far as Tel Aviv.

The posters, displayed in three locations in Gaza City, show the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, surrounded by Iranian and Palestinian flags, two hands in a handshake with the words, "Thank You Iran" in Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders have also publicly thanked Iran.

Marvin Miller, the union leader who helped create free agency for baseball players and in the process brought multimillion-dollar contracts to professional sports, died Tuesday at age 95.

Miller became executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association in 1966 after working with the steelworkers' union. He served for 16 years, building the MLBPA into one of the most powerful unions in the country.

He found that standard players contracts included a "reserve clause," which bound players to the team that originally signed them. Essentially, players had only two choices: accept the contract offered by the team or try to hold out for more money.

Slowly, Miller helped the players attain more negotiating rights, challenging the reserve clause in court.

The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the reserve clause in 1973, but free agency eventually came to the players in the mid-1970s.

Miller's tenure also featured two strikes, in 1972 and 1981.

After stepping down in 1982, Miller served as a consultant to the players' union.

In an interview with NY1's Budd Mishkin in 2000, Miller explained the bargaining power of unions.

"The only strength the union has in negotiations, or at any other time, is in their unity, making sure their members understand what the issues are, understand what the economic facts are and understand what the policies are," Miller said.

Hank Aaron, the famed Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves right fielder, was once quoted as saying Miller was "as important to the history of baseball as Jackie Robinson."

The minimum player contract in 1968 was $6,000 and in now, in 2012, it is $480,000.

On Tuesday morning, Miller died in his Manhattan home, following a battle with liver cancer.

jhonsonlara: jugindarsharma8: Shopping and Product Reviews: Will ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80's was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I'm driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Syrian jets bomb rebel base near Turkey border

BUKULMEZ, Turkey (Reuters) - Syrian warplanes bombed a rebel headquarters near the Turkish border on Monday, missing their target but sending hundreds of Syrians fleeing across the frontier.

The attack on the Free Syrian Army base in Atima, 2 km (1 mile) from the border, came a day before Turkish and NATO officials were due to start assessing where to station surface-to-air missiles close to the 900 km (560 mile) border.

Turkey, a major supporter of insurgents fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad, has repeatedly scrambled jets along the joint border and responded in kind when Syrian shells have landed inside Turkey.

But Ankara, rejecting Syrian complaints that the Patriots were "provocative", stressed they would be used only to defend Turkish territory, not to create a no-fly zone inside Syria that rebels want to neutralize Assad's massive air power.

Describing the bombing of the FSA base, opposition activist Ahmed, who lives within a few blocks of it, said: "Two Syrian fighter jets came and fired five rockets. Three have hit farm areas and another two hit buildings near the base."

Monday's strike was one of the closest to the Turkish border carried out by Syrian jets. Ahmed said it was the first time they targeted the FSA base set up by senior rebel Mustafa al-Sheikh when he crossed over to Syria from Turkey two months ago.

Rebels fired anti-aircraft guns at the jets but they were flying too high to be hit, activists said. "I think the reason for the raid may have something to do with increased weapons movements (from Turkey)," Ahmed said.

Several hundred Syrians fled into Turkey after the raid and were being taken care of by the Turkish army. At least two wounded people were taken across the border.

The Turkish Anatolian news agency said an anti-aircraft shell fired during clashes in another Syrian border town, Harem, hit the roof of a house in the Turkish district of Reyhanli, causing no casualties.

After 20 months of conflict, rebels have been tightening their hold on farmland and urban centers to the east and northeast of Damascus, and have seized a string of military bases in the past 10 days.

PATRIOT DEPLOYMENT

A joint Turkish-NATO team will start work on Tuesday assessing where to put Patriot missiles, how many will be needed and the number of foreign troops to be sent to operate them.

Turkey is reluctant to be drawn into the fighting, but the proximity of Syrian bombing raids to its border is straining its nerves. It is worried about its neighbor's chemical weapons, the refugee crisis on its border, and what it says is Syrian support for Kurdish militants on its own soil.

Activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war, which started with peaceful demonstrations for reform but grew into demands for the overthrow of 42 years of dynastic rule by Assad and his late father, Hafez al-Assad.

Attacks by mainly Sunni Muslim rebels against Assad's forces have become increasingly effective and deadly. The president, from Syria's Alawite minority which is linked to Shi'ite Islam, has responded with devastating artillery and air bombardment.

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled their country and more than 2 million more have been displaced. The opposition said last week $60 billion would be needed for reconstruction.

The military installations rebels have captured in the last 10 days include a major facility in the northern province of Aleppo and several bases around the capital Damascus.

EUPHRATES DAM CAPTURED

On Monday activists said rebels took control of the Tishreen dam on the Euphrates river, east of the city of Aleppo. Internet video footage showed gunmen inside what appeared to be the control room, undamaged following the rebel capture.

Other footage showed rebels opening up ammunition boxes, including one marked RPG (rocket-propelled grenades), which they said were seized from Assad's forces holding the dam.

On Sunday rebels said they had captured a helicopter base east of Damascus, their latest gain in a battle that is drawing nearer to Assad's seat of power in the capital.

The Marj al-Sultan base, 15 km (10 miles) from Damascus, is the second military facility on the outskirts of the city reported to fall to Assad's opponents this month. Activists said rebels destroyed two helicopters and taken 15 prisoners.

"We are coming for you Bashar!" a rebel shouted in an internet video of what activists said was Marj al-Sultan. Restrictions on non-state media meant it could not be verified.

The rebels have been tightening their hold on farmland and urban centers to the east and northeast of Damascus while a major battle has been under way for a week in the suburb of Daraya near the main highway south.

"We are seeing the starting signs of a rebel siege of Damascus," opposition campaigner Fawaz Tello said from Berlin. "Marj al-Sultan is very near to the Damascus Airport road and to the airport itself. The rebels appear to be heading toward cutting this as well as the main northern artery to Aleppo."

Assad's core forces, drawn mainly from his Alawite sect, are entrenched in the capital.

Acer C7 Chromebook review: Chrome OS on the cheap, but at what cost?

Acer C7 Chromebook review: Chrome OS on the cheap, but at what cost?

It's been just over a month since Google unveiled its gorgeous and affordable $249 Samsung Chromebook only to surprise us days later with an even cheaper system, the $199 Acer C7 Chromebook. At first glance, these two laptops are very similar, both in purpose (cloud-based computing on a budget) and in specs (11.6-inch display, dual-core CPU, 2GB of RAM), but there are significant differences under the hood. Samsung's offering achieves its svelte form factor, 6.5-hour battery life and attractive price via a fully integrated and fanless ARM-based design while Acer takes a more conservative approach -- cramming standard off-the-shelf components like a 2.5-inch hard drive, small-outline memory module, mini-PCIe WiFi card, and Intel Celeron processor into a traditional netbook-like chassis. Does being $50 cheaper make up for the C7's lack of sex appeal and short 4-hour battery life? What other compromises in performance and build quality (if any) were made to achieve this lower cost? Most importantly, which budget Chromebook is right for you? Find out after the break.

CAIRO (AP) ? Prominent Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless the Islamist president rescinds his new, near absolute powers, as the country's long fragmented opposition sought to unite and rally new protests.

Egypt's liberal and secular forces ? long divided, weakened and uncertain amid the rise of Islamist parties to power ? are seeking to rally themselves in response to the decrees issued this week by President Mohammed Morsi. The president granted himself sweeping powers to "protect the revolution" and made himself immune to judicial oversight.

The judiciary, which was the main target of Morsi's edicts, pushed back Saturday. The country's highest body of judges, the Supreme Judical Council, called his decrees an "unprecedented assault." Courts in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria announced a work suspension until the decrees are lifted.

Outside the high court building in Cairo, several hundred demonstrators rallied against Morsi, chanting, "Leave! Leave!" echoing the slogan used against former leader Hosni Mubarak in last year's uprising that ousted him. Police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of young men who were shooting flares outside the court.

The edicts issued Wednesday have galvanized anger brewing against Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, ever since he took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president. Critics accuse the Brotherhood ? which has dominated elections the past year ? and other Islamists of monopolizing power and doing little to bring real reform or address Egypt's mounting economic and security woes.

Oppositon groups have called for new nationwide rallies Tuesday ? and the Muslim Brotherhood has called for rallies supporting Morsi the same day, setting the stage for new violence.

Morsi supporters counter that the edicts were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Like parliament was, the assembly is dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

In an interview with a handful of journalists, including The Associated Press, Nobel Peace laureate ElBaradei raised alarm over the impact of Morsi's rulings, saying he had become "a new pharaoh."

"There is a good deal of anger, chaos, confusion. Violence is spreading to many places and state authority is starting to erode slowly," he said. "We hope that we can manage to do a smooth transition without plunging the country into a cycle of violence. But I don't see this happening without Mr. Morsi rescinding all of this."

Speaking of Egypt's powerful military, ElBaradei said, "I am sure they are as worried as everyone else. You cannot exclude that the army will intervene to restore law and order" if the situation gets out of hand.

But anti-Morsi factions are chronically divided, with revolutionary youth activists, new liberal political parties that have struggled to build a public base and figures from the Mubarak era, all of whom distrust each other. The judiciary is also an uncomfortable cause for some to back, since it includes many Mubarak appointees who even Morsi opponents criticize as too tied to the old regime.

Opponents say the edicts gave Morsi near dictatorial powers, neutering the judiciary when he already holds both executive and legislative powers. One of his most controversial edicts gave him the right to take any steps to stop "threats to the revolution," vague wording that activists say harkens back to Mubarak-era emergency laws.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in nationwide protests on Friday, sparking clashes between anti-and pro-Morsi crowds in several cities that left more than 200 people wounded.

On Saturday, new clashed broke out in the southern city of Assiut. Morsi opponents and members of the Muslim Brotherhood swung sticks and threw stones at each other outside the offices of the Brotherhood's political party, leaving at least seven injured.

ElBaradei and a six other prominent liberal leaders have announced the formation of a National Salvation Front aimed at rallying all non-Islamist groups together to force Morsi to rescind his edicts.

The National Salvation Front leadership includes several who ran against Morsi in this year's presidential race ? Hamdeen Sabahi, who finished a close third, former foreign minister Amr Moussa and moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Aboul-Fotouh. ElBaradei says the group is also pushing for the creation of a new constitutional assembly and a unity government.

ElBaradei said it would be a long process to persuade Morsi that he "cannot get away with murder."

"There is no middle ground, no dialogue before he rescinds this declaration. There is no room for dialogue until then."

The grouping seems to represent a newly assertive political foray by ElBaradei, the former chief of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency. ElBaradei returned to Egypt in the year before Mubarak's fall, speaking out against his rule, and was influential with many of the youth groups that launched the anti-Mubarak revolution.

But since Mubarak's fall, he has been criticized by some as too Westernized, elite and Hamlet-ish, reluctant to fully assert himself as an opposition leader.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice political party, once headed by Morsi, said Saturday in a statement that the president's decision protects the revolution against former regime figures who have tried to erode elected institutions and were threatening to dissolve the constitutional assembly.

The Brotherhood warned in another statement that there were forces trying to overthrow the elected president in order to return to power. It said Morsi has a mandate to lead, having defeated one of Mubarak's former prime ministers this summer in a closely contested election.

Morsi's edicts also removed Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud, the prosecutor general first appointed by Mubarak, who many Egyptians accused of not prosecuting former regime figures strongly enough.

Speaking to a gathering of judges cheering support for him at the high court building in Cairo, Mahmoud warned of a "vicious campaign" against state institutions. He also said judicial authorities are looking into the legality of the decision to remove him ? setting up a Catch-22 of legitimacy, since under Morsi's decree, the courts cannot overturn any of his decisions.

"I thank you for your support of judicial independence," he told the judges.

"Morsi will have to reverse his decision to avoid the anger of the people," said Ahmed Badrawy, a labor ministry employee protesting at the courthouse. "We do not want to have an Iranian system here," he added, referring to fears that hardcore Islamists may try to turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Several hundred protesters remained in Cairo's Tahrir Square Saturday, where a number of tents have been erected in a sit-in following nearly a week of clashes with riot police.

Twitter as a Powerful Internet Customer Service Force | Business 2 ...

On the vast landscape that is the Internet, Twitter is fast becoming more and more of a powerful tool to be utilized for sales purposes. In the past, most people have probably thought of Twitter as just another social media site on which to communicate with others ? friends, famous people, and even news outlets. Then, companies began to discover the many uses that Twitter has.

Twitter forces the user to be clear and concise in tweets
? 140 characters goes by very quickly if you are rambling. Companies have utilized these 140 characters to do so many things. Advertising, linking, and company voice type posts have all become popular. Twitter is also being used as an incredibly powerful customer service tool.

For example, I often browse a blog called Dooce. The writer of the blog had written several entries regarding buying a new washing machine. The machine broke and needed parts replaced even though it was quite new. She was having a hard time getting someone from the washing machine company?s customer service department to take her seriously. Customer Support using TwitterThe Dooce blog is quite popular and the writer has many Twitter followers. She decided to tweet her grievances to the company. Lo and behold, not only did her problem get fixed almost immediately, a rival washing machine company offered her one of their sets (washer and dryer) for free! I believe that she decided to donate the free pair to a women?s shelter. Such is the power of Twitter as a customer service force.

Another interesting Twitter personality is a guy named Gary Vaynerchuk. A video post about him on TWiT.TV was recently brought to my attention. Gary is the CEO and co-founder of a social media consulting company. More relevant to this post, however, he also works for an online wine retail store as the co-owner and the director of operations. While he is less active with the wine business lately, he still does and always has made a point to personally answer every single tweet regarding his wine business with a clear and thoughtful answer. In turn, his online wine store became immensely popular.

Social media as a customer service tool is still a rather new concept in the grand scheme of things. However, there are key ingredients to making social media work for your business that you should follow. As a small business owner or operator, it?s a great idea to take advantage of utilizing as many social networks as time and resources will allow for. The more networks that you are able to maintain a presence on, the more opportunities to display great customer service. In turn, this can also drive up your sales. Consumers tend to respond strongly (and with their wallets) to companies that they perceive as having great customer service.

If you are a new or up and coming business, consider using Twitter to do some research on what similar companies are doing or offering. Pay special attention to how any disputes or complaints are resolved. Twitter can be a great tool to help build your brand and subsequently, your reputation for customer service. The blog post on this site titled 8 Twitter Powerhouses You Must Follow is a great read if you are looking for shining examples of people who use Twitter as a tool to communicate with others.

Mason: Discipline in Peter Gray case to be determined | TheGazette

It?s possible some University of Iowa employees will face discipline in the handling of sexual harassment allegations against former Athletics Department adviser Peter Gray, UI President Sally Mason said Tuesday.

Any discipline stemming from the case will depend on what university officials find in additional investigation of the how university processes were followed and how complaints were acted upon, Mason said in an interview with The Gazette.

?Part of the reason we continue to do audits of what happened, what transpired and asking a number of questions along those lines is to determine exactly what happened, when it happened, who knew and whether further disciplinary actions need to be taken,? Mason said.

Changes announced Friday by Mason in the wake of the Gray investigation shift supervision of student-athlete advisers and of athletics compliance so they are overseen by top UI administrators. When asked Tuesday what this means for the job duties of Fred Mims, associate athletic director for athletic student service and compliance, Mason said she could not comment because that?s confidential personnel information.

?I think in reading the report, it was clear to me that we need to ? do some further work in terms of understanding how well policies, our sexual harassment policies, were being followed,? Mason said. ?At least in the case of the academics and compliance area, over in athletics, at least now for a while, having them duly report to the provost office and to general counsel makes a lot of sense while we continue looking into the facts of the matter that have occurred.?

That Gray?s behavior appeared to be ongoing, according to the internal university report, ?absolutely concerns me,? Mason said.

?We?re absolutely looking at what kinds of things were done to address it and when they were done,? she said.

That internal university report, dated Oct. 24, details the allegations against Gray and says the investigation provided a reasonable basis to conclude he violated university policy on sexual harassment. That report was leaked to the Iowa City Press-Citizen a few days after Gray resigned Nov. 5.

Investigation into allegations against Gray began in early October, which is also when Mason was made aware a complaint had been filed, she said. Once a complaint is filed, Mason said, that ?almost immediately kicks into an investigation.?

Regarding the window of time from the Oct. 24 internal university report and Gray?s Nov. 5 resignation, Mason said under university procedure for an ongoing investigation, ?an individual in that situation would have been put on paid leave and would not be working at the university during that time.?

Mason said she could not comment specifically on why Gray was allowed to resign. But in speaking generally about a case where someone resigns rather than is terminated, she said if a resignation is offered on a voluntary basis there is no appeal process and ?its done, it?s over in the university.? But if the university fires someone, the opportunity for appeal and further due process kicks in, she said.

To her knowledge, Mason said there has been no financial settlement between Gray and the university. Gray?s resignation letter, requested by The Gazette and other media outlets, has not been released because it?s part of his confidential personnel record, she said.

Gray, 59, at the time of his resignation was associate director of athletic student services, a job he held since 2002. He also worked in the UI Athletics Department from 1993 to 1995.

Mason said she was not aware of any previous complaints filed against Gray during his earlier employment with the university, but said if such complaints existed, they likely would be part of the confidential personnel record and not shared.

A university audit of hiring practices is among the actions Mason announced Friday. If Gray?s rehire in 2002 was a typical university hiring process, Mason said there would have been a search committee and a national search with multiple candidates interviewed. The decision on who to hire would have been a recommendation from the search committee and the job supervisor, she said.

Officials at Coastal Carolina University last week said Gray was fired from an academic advising position there in 1999, not for misconduct but for job performance. That school released some of Gray?s records, including the separation form and his offer letter, in response to media requests. When asked why the UI is not releasing similar documents regarding Gray, Mason said ?I?m working on advice from our counsel.?

Hiring an employee who has been fired elsewhere ?really depends on what information is available when you do reference checks,? Mason said.

?It?s part of the reason why we?re looking thoroughly into the hiring practices in this unit to make sure they were following not only good practices, but practices that are routinely and typically in place at the university,? she said.

It?s possible the UI audit of hiring practices and the investigation of processes in the areas of student-athlete advising services and compliance could take several months, Mason said. The results will not be ready in time to report to the state Board of Regents at the board?s Dec. 5 meeting, but Mason said she is optimistic the report will be ready for the Feb. 7 regents meeting in Iowa City.

?There?s too much work to be done to rush this,? she said.

(AP) ? World stock markets rose Thursday after a survey showed that China's manufacturing expanded for the first time in 13 months, rare good news for the struggling global economy. Sentiment also benefited from a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

HSBC's Purchasing Managers' Index, which combines various measures of manufacturing activity in China, rose to 50.4 for November. That was up from October's PMI of 49.5 and September's PMI of 47.9. Readings above 50 denote growth.

The survey shows that the "economic recovery continues to gain momentum towards the year end," analysts at HSBC said. "However, it is still the early stage of recovery and global economic growth remains fragile."

Stocks in Europe were higher in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.4 percent to 5,775.44. Germany's DAX added 0.5 percent to 7,221.09 and France's CAC-40 advanced 0.3 percent to 3,487.34. U.S. stock markets will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday and will also close early Friday.

Asian markets also registered strong gains, boosted by the manufacturing news from China, a major market for many countries in the region.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1 percent to close at 21,743.20. South Korea's Kospi added 0.8 percent to 1,899.50 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1 percent to 4,424.20. Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan also advanced.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.6 percent to close at 9,366.80 ? its highest finish since May 2 ? as a recently weakened yen provided a vital boost to the export-heavy index.

Positive news out of Europe and the U.S. also helped sustain investor confidence. In Europe, finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro will continue talks Monday to reach an agreement on releasing more money to debt-crippled Greece. Athens is expected to eventually get an overdue ?31.5 billion ($40 billion) loan payment urgently needed to pay its bills.

Investors are also expecting a resolution to the U.S. "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts that are set to take effect Jan. 1 unless Congress and the Obama administration reach a deal first.

Independent analyst Andrew Sullivan in Hong Kong said overall investment sentiment could improve once the U.S. budget issue is dealt with. Traders are also keeping an eye on Japan's election on Dec. 16, which could usher in new leaders calling for bold monetary policies to get the country out of deflation.

"I think over the next few weeks we will see the market continue to grind higher," Sullivan said. "That will give equity investors more confidence as prospects improve."

Among individual stocks, Japan's export shares were among the big gainers. Yamaha Motor Co. jumped 4.8 percent. Sharp Corp. gained 4.3 percent.

South Korean high-tech shares also rose. SK Hynix gained 2.8 percent and Samsung Electronics added 2.4 percent. In Hong Kong, China Mobile Ltd. rose 1.6 percent.

Wall Street got a slight bounce Wednesday after news of a cease-fire agreement between Israel and the Hamas militant group to end eight days of fierce fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 24 cents to $87.62 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 63 cents to finish at $87.38 on the Nymex on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2859 from $1.2825 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar slipped to 82.73 yen from 82.49 yen.

The Antikamnia Chemical Company produced a series of illustrated calendars at the turn of the last century populated with these skeleton sketches and pithy reminders to physicians that, as one box of their pain killers states, ?Feeling is a sense. Feeling pain is Nonsense, No matter When or Where.? They were eventually prosecuted in 1914 for failing to disclose the ingredients of their addictive painkillers.

Body found after oil platform blast

(CNN) ?

Divers found the body of a man believed to be one of two crew members missing after an oil platform blast in the Gulf of Mexico, the platform's manager said.

The two crew members went missing Friday after an explosion triggered a fire and injured at least 11 people.

Black Elk Energy President and CEO John Hoffman said the body was discovered Saturday night under the platform, on the sea floor.

The body has not been identified, Hoffman told reporters.

"We're working in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard so we can respectfully and most efficiently recover the body and get that body to shore," Hoffman said.

The explosion occurred about 20 miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana, on a platform used for production, not drilling. Black Elk Energy, a Houston-based firm, was in charge of the platform.

About 28 gallons of fuel spilled into the region, Coast Guard Response Division Chief Ed Cubanski said. An oil sheen reportedly stretched for about a half-mile near the platform.

The injured were airlifted to area hospitals, and nine other crew members were evacuated, according to the Coast Guard.

Four of the injured suffered major burns and were being treated Saturday at Baton Rouge General Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Of the four, two were in critical condition, said Jeffrey Littleton, a burn surgeon and chief of surgery. The other two were in serious but stable condition, he said.
